Tabith Awal, probable BNP-nominated candidate in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election, is about to launch his election campaign from Saturday on the instruction of the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Tabith Awal, also member of the BNP National Executive Committee, told the Daily Observer: "We saw vote rigging in the last election. We do not want to see the repetition of it under the present Election Commission."
"We hope the EC will hold a fair election in Dhaka ahead of the national elections to earn the trust of people," he added.
Tabith is now getting his posters and banners made; he is also working on the election manifesto. He has already set up an office in Tejgoan industrial area to conduct election activities.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is likely to formally announce the name of Tabith Awal for his candidature for the poll on Saturday night.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will sit at a meeting with her policy making body the National Standing Committee on Saturday night to finalise the candidate. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the BNP Chief's Gulshan political office at 8:30pm.
A party Standing Committee member wishing anonymity said the meeting was convened mainly to finalise the party's mayoral candidate for the DNCC by-polls.
After the meeting Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will announce the name of the BNP candidate.
