Thousands of passengers were stuck and more than 500 vehicles got stranded on Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbari ferry routes since early Sunday due to heavy fog.

“The ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia route were kept suspended from 4:30 am due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog," said Nasir Mohammad Chowdhury, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha.

Six ferries remained stuck in the middle of the river while seven others laid anchored at Paturia and three at Daulatdia ghats.

Meanwhile, ferry services on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route came to a complete halt from 6am due to blurred visibility caused by thick fog, said Shah Newaz Khalid, assistant general manager of BIWTC, report UNB.

Four ferries were stranded with thousands of passengers in the mid-river, causing immense sufferings to passengers amid chilling cold weather.

The ferry services on the busy routes will resume once the visibility returns, said BIWTC officials.
