Zumba is an exercise fitness programme created by Colombian dancer and cyclist/choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez. Zumba is a trademark owned by Zumba Fitness, LLC. It involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music.  It has been gaining popularity in the world since the 1990s. But, for Bangladesh it's a fairly new concept. Let's say, maybe it has emerged in the last 3 to 4 years.
In 180+ countries all over the world, almost 15 million people take a Zumba class every week. In Bangladesh, the trend is also catching up slowly, but surely. Almost a good chunk of people have opted for Zumba classes rather than just the conventional cardio work out at the gym.
Zumba helps one burn around 600 to 800 calories in a one hour class through aerobic activity, also with keeping interval training in mind. It is both a dance class and a fitness class. By joining a Zumba class, one will definitely improve their coordination, which is extremely important to maintain as one grows older. The fitness programme is designed in a way that helps reaching one's target heart rate much easier than standard workout routines one usually does at a gym. It does this by using songs that play around 145 beats per minute. This fast pace makes it feel natural to move around quickly. This will set one on the path to true aerobic exercise. Since, Zumba uses fast paced music, by moving to the beats one can build their endurance just by doing a few sessions. It builds their anaerobic endurance rather quickly.
As a whole, it's most important in helping to maintain a good cardio-vascular respiratory system. Aside from its heart-health benefits, Zumba provides a workout for the whole body. It is for all age groups and people from all walks of life. Starting from children at the age of 4 to senior citizens who are 60+, anyone can be a part of the Zumba family. While winter is not a season that encourages exercise, it is still important to maintain a healthy attitude. Instead of going on hibernation mode, one can easily beat the winter blues by dancing to upbeat tunes indoors and socializing with people in a Zumba session. Because, Zumba is not a workout it is a party, just like its tagline states.
Celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez swear by Zumba. The famous reality TV Show American Idol Winner Jordin Sparks is a big fan too and she has lost almost 30 pounds, thanks to the programme.
One should go to a Zumba class at least 3 times a week. But, it also depends on each person's body type and the kind of weight loss goal they have in mind. One can partake in more classes as Zumba is quite addictive and one may get carried away!

The number of students grow every day, as people are getting way more fitness conscious than they ever were before. The sessions are one hour long, with a proper warm-up and a cool down at the end of each class. There are also different dance styles in each class, for example: Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco, Cha-cha-cha, Reggaeton, Soca, Samba, Hip hop, Axé, Bollywood and Tango. "Right now I am already conducting my classes at Aamra Active, Gulshan. But, in the future there are some plans to conduct classes at other venues as well."
Zumba is a fun way to stay fit and happy. Anyone who is concerned about their health and loves to dance should try it out. Workouts that feel like work are hard to get excited about but Zumba is so enjoyable that one may get obsessed with it. It completely changes the idea of exercise, because it's something you really look forward to. It is a mood booster and will also keep you on a healthy routine. So, stay happy and keep doing Zumba.
