The mendicant and I

    -Ainon N
Her world unseen
Childhood cried
Old age wept
Fused in one word
Hunger
Thus, she discovered
Dusky forest of the streets

Possessions, indulgence
Love, bond
War, justice
The old, the new
Illusions
Refused to become intimate
She was born for death
said she
And quietly walked away
into the shadow of a city
that arranges itself for no one
There was no fear of need

I stood alone
Unmasked
Voicing words in recess
Untouched, unwanted
The contour of thoughts
Rough edged
Something altered
Changed forever
She and I walk together
Both dispensable
One resigned to life's inclinations
The other entangled in its rendering

-Ainon N is a poet, writer, critic. She writes from Chicago, USA
