Home Minister Asaduz-zaman Khan Kamal on Wednesday said Khaleda Zia has not been shown arrested in any other case. Kamal said, "She has been convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case and is now serving her prison term."
"Confusion is being created over the issue. If there is any production warrant (PW) and if the court thinks that it will summon her, it's not our matter," the Minister told journalists at his ministry office.
Khaleda, 72, is now in the old Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road, which the authorities described as a 'special prison'. The Minister said BNP chairperson is being given all facilities according to the Jail Code.
Responding to an allegation that Khaleda is being kept in an old and musty building, the Home Minister said the Kashimpur Jail is far away and there is no female ward in the Keraniganj Central Jail."That's why she is being kept there for her convenience. This place is good," he said. This jail has also not been declared abandoned, the Minister added.
On Monday, several Dhaka-based media outlets reported that Khaleda was formally arrested in three other cases, which prompted harsh criticism from the BNP. The party described it as a plot to lengthen Khaleda's stay in prison. Kamal described the media reports baseless.
On Monday, jail authorities said they received court orders to produce Khaleda in hearings of two other graft cases.
"She will attend the hearings, we have nothing to do with that and she has secured bail in those two cases," the Home Minister said on Tuesday. Rebuffing BNP's claims of a plot, Kamal said, "The government is not at all enthusiastic over the issue. Everything is proceeding according to the law."
A three-time prime minister, Khaleda, was sentenced to a five-year term on February 8, when a Special Dhaka Court found her guilty of misappropriating foreign funds donated to an orphanage.
