Left leaning student organisations and different socio-cultural organisations on Wednesday observed the ‘Autocracy Resistance Day’ recalling the uprising of 1983 that forced the cancellation of Mazid Khan Education Commission report and forged students’ unity against the military rule of HM Ershad.
Progressive Students Alliance, a platform of left leaning student fronts, pought out a procession on Dhaka University campus marking the day which paraded several streets of the university followed by a pief rally in front of DUCSU building.
While addressing the rally, student leaders said that the education system is now on the verge of collapse and becoming a factory of producing ‘demons’ as question of public exams are being leaked continuously.
Lambasting the government, they said it utterly failed to apprehend the perpetrators though they leaked the questions with prior announcement on different social media platforms hours before the exam.
On Fepuary 14, 1983, during the martial law regime of HM Ershad, students marched towards Bangladesh Secretariat protesting against the Mazid Khan-led education commission report and for restoration of democracy.
Police opened fire and lobbed teargas shells on the procession, killing several students and injuring many of them.
The students’ uprising in 1983 was the beginning of a movement after the Ershad regime grabbed power in 1982.
