A Bede Palli at East Eozbalia village in Sadar upazila of Noakhali district has come under attack over the rumour of a teenager's death.

During the attack on Monday afternoon, agitated mob vandalised, looted and torched the houses of the Bede community.

According to police, one Tareq Aziz, 17, received burn injuries after he suddenly fell on a hot oil pot of a Bede man's shop during an altercation between the shopkeeper and locals on Friday. He is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

A rumour spread on Monday afternoon that Tareq died at the DMCH that led the angry mob to attack the bede people.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and fired 70 rounds gun shots to bring the situation under control, said Sudharampur Model Police Station officer in-charge Anwar Hossain.

Local MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner Tanmoy Das and Acting Superintendent of Noakhali Police Saikat Shahin visited the spot.
