BRRI invents two new high yielding rice varieties
GAZIPUR, Oct 11: Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed two new high yielding rice varieties, namely BRRI Dhan-88 and BRRI Dhan-89, which are suitable for cultivation in Boro season.
National Seed Board (NSB) in its meeting on Tuesday approved the cultivation of the two varieties.
Acting Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry Md Nasiruzzaman presided over the meeting while BRRI Director General Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir and other senior officials of different organisations were also present.
The average yield of the newly released BRRI Dhan-88 is 7 tonnes per hectare which is 0.5 tonnes higher than BRRI Dhan-28. Its life cycle is similar to BRRI Dhan-28. Pest and disease infection in BRRI Dhan-88 is comparatively less than the other conventional varieties.
The average yield of the BRRI Dhan-89 is within 8 to 9 tonnes per hectare, which is one tonne higher than BRRI Dhan-29. Its life cycle is 154 to 158 days. The cooked rice out of this variety is non-sticky and delicious. That is why it is likely to be popular among farmers.
