Few female professionals so far could imprint an impression in the field of Sales and Marketing in Bangladesh, an area which is primarily dominated by male, given the challenges and other social factors that limit women in general, in our society. Sharmin Zaman is among that handful of exceptions, that successfully thrived in the tougher condition for women and established herself as an icon, not only for female professionals but for all who are endeavoring to build a career in this segment.
She possesses long track record of building a couple of brand names in Bangladesh and has been playing pioneering role in building and marketing country's largest fiber optic infrastructure operator, Summit Communications Limited (SCL),from a dream till turned into reality.
Starting her career in corporate world, over a decade now, presently Sharmin is the General Manager, Head of Sales and Marketing at Summit Communications Ltd-a position that speaks a volume of her continuous success and footprints in a field where we hardly see a woman at the top.
She started her career in the leading telecom operator Grameenphone Ltd in 2006 as a 'Key Account Manager' in Corporate Sales, after graduating in Business Administration from North South University, Dhaka. In 2012, she joined SCL as Manager, Sales & Marketing. With her outstanding performance, integrity and devotion towards work, sheestablishedan exemplary profile in Telecom and ICT sector at present.
Recently, she has been honored with "Bangladesh's Woman Leaders" award in "Bangladesh Women Leadership Awards 2018" presented by CMO Asia held in last September, 2018. The Award aims at recognizing professionals who have excelled in leadership and "made a difference" to their organizations and industry.
The award itself is the testament of her remarkable success and contribution in her professional field. The noteworthy part of 'Bangladesh Women Leadership Award' is that, it doesn't solicit any nomination or sponsorship from the organizations of the awardees. Rather they have a research cell that compliments the selection of award winners by shortlisting individuals who are exhibiting extra-ordinary work in different industries and tracking the record of their achievements.
The Women Leadership Award, is celebrated in several geographic regions as a build-up to the World Women Leadership Congress which is a part of the World HRD Congress. In its 9th year, the event celebrated the works and successes of some of the finest women leaders & achievers in organizations of Bangladesh which believe in producing leaders such as leaders of change, leaders who are iconic and foster talent management strategy in alliance with their vision &mission.
"It's my immense pleasure, this year they have selected me as one of the Woman Leaders of Bangladesh to recognize my humble effort. It's an honor for me to be able to represent Summit Communications Ltd in the grand event, being the largest fiber optic infrastructure operator in the telecom & ICT sector of our country. Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to my SCL Family for their relentless effort throughout the journey of building a new Bangladesh. Thanks to 'CMO Asia' for this prestigious recognition," Sharmin said.
In SCL, she made herself an exemplary contributor by provingher leadership and excellence to take the company at the leading position through a very challenging eco system in just 7 years of time. Summit Communications Limited has now established more than 42,000 km fiber optic network in the country on which all the mobile operators, ISPs and Govt. organizations are dependent for their backbone transmission requirements.
In SCL, Sharmin and her team played a significant role to lift the bar high from the start up stage to date, dealing with a number of local & global customers, partners and other stakeholders. She worked relentlessly in setting forward-looking strategies, complimented technological innovation and portrayed strong negotiation abilities with companies like Tata Communications Ltd., Bharti Airtel, SingTel etc.
Acknowledging her efforts and passion towards her job, Sharmin Zaman was entrusted with captaincy of Sales and Marketing team as the Head of the department in 2016, by SCL. Since then she has been navigating her team to build customer centric and target driven culture through designing right products and services. Nowadays, she is well regarded in the industry in terms of formulating corporate strategies, B2B sales, Market Segmentation, Market Research and Customer Relationship Management.
Sharmin believes in driving positive change through assertive approach and synergy. She says, "To live we need money. To create influence on others we need name. It's true that we work for them. But we should primarily work for creating impact; the vision of my career is to be capable enough to introduce positive changes in our society and create long lasting positive impact".
"I truly feel proud and inspired to be a part of the organization which isdiligently working to build up our country's Telecom & ICT infrastructure and scaling up thecommunications to a global standard," she said.
She also stated that, "In SCL I am fortunate to have a team of 22 achievers and I dreamthat one day each of them will be a brand name as individuals".She believesin the motto- "Work for a cause not for applause."
Apart from her professionalbusy schedule, Sharmin Zaman is engaged with social welfare and community based activities. She keeps herself involved in supportingwomen empowerment in the society. She advocates for equal employment opportunity in workplace for women, free from discriminations and judged by merit.
