OT in disability rehabilitation
Nowadays disable people are increasing day by day. Disability can be occurring in many reasons. There are an estimated 16 million people with disabilities in Bangladesh, or 10% of the country's population. Occupational therapy is very important therapy among of these disable people for their rehabilitation.
According to Canadian Occupational Therapy Association (COTA), Occupational therapy is a type of health care that helps to solve the problems that interfere with a person's ability to do the things that are important to them - everyday things like:
* Self-care - getting dressed, eating, moving around the house,
* Being productive - going to work or school, participating in the community, and
* Leisure activities - sports, gardening, social activities.
Occupational therapy can also prevent a problem or minimize its effects.Doctors use medicine for treating patient where occupational therapist uses purposeful activity, physical exercises, adaptive device, one handed techniques and home environment modification for treatment purpose. The aim of occupational therapist is to make independent the patient into their daily activities.
There are different areas where occupational therapists work. These areas are given bellow:
Occupational therapist provides treatment in different neurological condition like Stroke, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), Head Injury, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Transverse Myelitis (TM), etc.
Cerebral Palsy (CP),Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Club Feet, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Intellectual Disability (ID)
Low back pain, neck pain, fracture, amputation, burn, hand injury, arthritis etc.
Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Depression, drug addiction etc.
Occupational therapists (OTs) work with children in special schools to help them develop functional skills for everyday life in the areas of self-care, life skills, school work and play.
Dementia, Parkinson's disease (PD), Arthritis, Palliative Care, Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid Arthritis etc.
Occupational therapist plays variety of role before disaster, during disaster and after disaster.
Ergonomics, we as occupational therapists identify and reduce accident and injury risks by identifying different factors. According to problem identification occupational therapy provides different recommendations.
Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings including:
Home and community: Home care, private practices, health boards, community mental health centres, clinics, halfway houses, group homes, vocational programs, community action groups, and workers compensation boards.
Institutions: Hospitals, intermediate and long term care facilities, rehabilitation centres, nursing homes, mental health centres, correctional institutions, recreation centres, schools, universities and colleges, research centers.
Industry and business: Corporations, rehabilitation companies, insurance companies, and architectural firms.
Government: All levels of government advising in the areas of health promotion, disability prevention/management, accessibility, vocational/health planning and international rehabilitation program development.
