235 ASPs made SP
The government has promoted 235 Additional Superintendents of Police (ASP) to the Superintendent of Police (SP) posts.
According to a circular, of the promoted police officials, 230 were given promotions under supernumerary in Grade V.
The officials, who got supernumerary Grade V posts, will hold the same office and perform the same duties even after getting promotions.
Supernumerary (in-situ) positions are given to Admin Cadres in order to ease commotion among officials serving without promotion for a long period.
The government move comes just months ahead of the upcoming national elections, which is will be held on December 23.
When there are no posts vacant in the department's top tiers, the police headquarters come up with an in-situ solution, the British-era formula for promotion in the administration cadre.
An in-situ official is someone who continues to hold the same office and perform the same duties even after being elevated to a higher position.
The police headquarters sent a proposal to the Home Ministry on July 4, stating that "competent officials" have been serving in the same positions for a long time as suitable posts were not created at the upper level of police.
