AL starts selling nomination papers, 1700 sold on first day

Ruling party Awami League on Friday started selling of nomination papers for the candidate who wants to contest under the party banner in the upcoming 11th general elections, just after a day of the announcement of poll schedule.
The first day was closed with selling 1700 forms, sources said
The party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader inaugurated nomination form sales by purchasing two nomination papers on behalf of the party President Sheikh Hasina at her political office, in Dhanmondi, around 10:00am.
Later, the two forms were handed over to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, religious affairs secretary of the party.
This year, Awami League has increased the price of nomination papers from Tk 25,000 to Tk 30,000. A total of eight booths have been opened for selling the forms of the eight divisions.
Obaidul Quader also Road Transport and Bridges Minister bought another nomination form for Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for contesting the polls from Rangpur-6 and handed over it to Deputy Speaker
Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah.
AL joint secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif bought nomination form for AL general secretary Quader to contest from Noakhali-5 constituency.
During the occasion hundreds of followers of Awami League nomination seekers gathered in front of the party president's office to drum up support for their respective leaders.
In the occasion Obaidul Quader said the selling of nomination forms started amid huge enthusiasm of the party followers.
"People are clamouring to buy the AL nomination forms and the last date of form distribution will be decided on Sunday (Nov 11) after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board headed by Sheikh Hasina," he said.
Quader said, "BNP announcing protests after the announcement of schedule goes against democracy but people will not pay heed to them. The Election Commission announced the polls schedule in line with the election laws and we are following the rules."
According to the announced schedule the 11th parliamentary elections will be held on December 23. Last date for filing nomination papers for candidacy is November 19. The returning officers will scrutinise the nomination papers on November 22 while the last date for withdrawing candidature is November 29.
