Poem

Your headscarf

To the world it maybe
just a piece of fabric,
But like a ring box
that holds a gemstone,
Your headscarf, to me,
holds a world in itself !

Earlier I thought to compare
your sober headscarf
that you drape over yourself,
To the boundless night sky
that carries the Moon.
I was about to say
that just like the full Moon
set out to illuminate the Earth,
Your endearments and presence
brightens up my world !

But NO ! I'll abstain from
using this simile in my verse.
Not for the reason that
it's an overused analogy

But because it's like likening
a fresh lake - deep & limpid - as your face
To the dead sea - dead & lifeless - as the Moon;

For the Moon is but
a huge barren orb,
And you are, contrarily,
so much full of life !

Your eyes twinkle
under the headscarf,
Not like the stars
that keep burning eternally,
But your eyes do shimmer
like a colony of fireflies
glowing with love and joy,
And like a freshwater lake
that glistens at sunrise !
