Shopkeeper beaten dead for refusing to sell cigarette on credit

A shopkeeper was beaten to death allegedly by a buyer for refusing to sell cigarette on credit in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Deceased Iliyas Mridha, 50, would run a mini shop in the area. He hailed from Mallikpur village under Lohagara Police Station in Narail district, said Ashulia Police Station sub-inspector Md Abdus Salam.

Quoting Iliyas' family, the SI said local Murad wanted to buy cigarette on credit from Iliyas' shop but the latter  refused this. Then, Murad locked into an altercation with Iliyas and at one stage, he hit the latter with bamboo stick, leaving him unconscious.

Local people rushed unconscious Iliyas to Enam Medical College and Hospital where he dies.

Later, the locals held Murad and handed over to police.
