
SATKHIRA: A mobile court in Satkhira district awarded seven people jail sentences of different periods--from six months to two years--for possessing and selling hemp on Friday evening.
Md. Asaduzzaman, Satkhira Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer, conducted the mobile court drive. They were arrested in separate drives by police and Department of Liquor and Narcotics.
Convicted Kazi Anwar Hossain, 26, son of late Kazi Kabir of Sultanpur under pourosova area was arrested with 50 grams of hemp from his house and was given six months imprisonment.
Abdul Kader Sagor, 20, son of Shawkat Ali of same village was caught red-handed with 200 grams of hemp from a house and was given two years of imprisonment by the mobile court.
Mintu Morol , 28 son of Moinuddin Morol of same village arrested with 200 gram hemp and was given two years' jail. The other convicted persons are Liakat Hossain, 32, son of Bari Sarder of village Thanaghata under Sadar upazila. He was arrested with 100 grams of hemp was sentenced with one year imprisonment. Sohag Hossain , 36, son of late former chairman Sahadat Hossain of same village, was arrested with 250 grams of hemp was sentenced with two years' imprisonment. Azibur Rahman, 31, son of Abdul Gafur of the same village, was arrested with 150 grams of hemp was given one year's imprisonment. Azizur Rahman, 31, son of Akter Hossain of village Goriadanga under Debhata upazila of the district was arrested with 250 grams of hemp and was given two years' jail.
UNO Md Asaduzzaman said the sentences were given on the basis of proofs and witnesses.
