
Followers of noted Islamic thinker Nurul Islam Farooqi have called a daylong hartal for Sunday in the capital and Chittagong in protest against the killing of the popular television presenter.
Three Islamic organizations— Ahle Sunnat Wa Al Jamaat, Bangladesh Islamic Front and its student wing Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Sena called the shutdown in the capital on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Islami Chhatra Sena declared the dawn-to-dusk hartal in Chittagong district from a demonstration programme in front of Chittagong Press Club on Thursday noon.
The party will hold protest rally across the country on August 30 and bring procession at divisional cities on August 31.
Earlier, madrasha students and followers of Nurul Islam Farooqi staged demonstration and barricaded roads in the city in the morning.
About 2,000 supporters of Farooqi took to the street at Muradpur crossing in the port city at about 8:30am and demonstrated till 10am.
They angry people also set fire to over 50 tyres and put up barricade at different points, disrupting traffic.
Moulana Nurul Islam Farooqi, also a presenter of a documentary titled ‘Kafela,' based on historic sites of Islam, on Channel i Television, was killed at his East Rajabazar residence in the capital on Wednesday evening.
