At least two people including a mysterious woman, who called on Nurul Islam Farooqi at his home hours before he was found dead with his throat slit open at his residence in Dhaka, were detained in Narayanganj on Saturday morning. Abdul Momin, Officer-in-Charge of the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station told The Daily Observer on Saturday that a team from the capital apprehended the woman, Mahmuda Khatun, 50, from Rupganj upazila. Another person Shariful Islam was held from Murapara in the same upazila, our correspondent said. Police were looking for the woman after the family members informed that a lady introducing herself as Asma visited Supreme Court mosque Imam Farooqi's East Rajabazar house in Dhaka just four hours before he was murdered on Wednesday night, OC Momin said. The sensational Farooqi Murder Case has been handed over to the Detective Branch of Police on Saturday night, DB sources said. The woman wanted to stay there overnight but failing to get permission, left the house in the evening, victim's son Faisal Farooqi told police quoting his mother. The team conducted raids at different parts of the capital to nab the culprits. Farooqi was brutally killed by unknown assailants at his East Rajabazar residence in the capital on Wednesday evening. Farooqi was the International Affairs Secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, and a presidium member of Bangladesh Islami Front. He owned a hajj agency, Faruqi Tours and Travels Private Ltd, and presented Islamic programmes on two private television channels. Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and several intelligence agencies are probing the gruesome murder focusing on several issues including personal and religious rivalry and financial feud over hajj business. After the killing, several thousand leaders and activists of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Bangladesh Islami Front and its student wing Chhatra Sena burst into protest demanding immediate arrest of the killers. Islami Chhatra Sena has called a countrywide half-day hartal for (Sunday) today demanding arrest of the killers of Nurul Islam Farooqi. Nurul Haque Chisty, president of the organisation, announced that they would enforce the general strike from 6:00am to 2:00pm on Sunday. The Chhatra Sena leader made the announcement at a press briefing at its central office in the capital's Fakirapool around 3:30pm. Our Panchagarh correspondent added, Farooqi was laid to eternal rest at his village home Nautari Nawabganj under Boda upazila of the district on Saturday. Farooqi, was buried besides his parents tombs at a graveyard following his last namaz-e-janaza at Nautari Nawabganj Primary School ground around 11:00am.The first janaza of Maulana Farooqi was held at the National Eidgah in the city after Juma' prayer on Friday. Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon, MP, of Panchagarh-2 constituency, among others, attended the janaza. Maulana Farooqi's body was taken to his village home at Nautari Nawabganj under Boroshashi union in Panchagarh district around 3:55 am. Maulana Nurul Islam Farooqi was the presenter of a TV documentary titled 'Kafela,' based on his visits to historic sites of Islam, on Channel i television.
