
The half-day hartal (shutdown), called by the Islamic Front's student affiliate, ended peacefully across the country on Sunday demanding arrest and trial of the killers of party leader Nurul Islam Farooqi.
Islami Chhatra Sena brought out a procession from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram in the capital’s Paltan area around 8:30am. Police stopped the procession near Paltan intersection.
Additional police forces have been deployed at key points of the city.
Vehicular movements in Dhaka were almost normal.
President of Islami Chhatra Sena Nurul Haq Chisti announced the eight-hour nationwide hartal on Saturday afternoon which started from 6am.
Farooqi, international affairs secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat andan anchor with two private television channels, was murdered in his East Rajabazar flat in Dhaka on Wednesday night.
He was also a presidium member of Islamic Front, connected with Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and the Khatib of High Court Mazar mosque, according to private TV channels.
