Senior lawyers meet Tuesday to discuss 16th amendment bill

Senior lawyers will hold a discussion meeting at the Supreme Court Bar Council building on Tuesday on the government’s move to re-empower parliament to remove judges through the 16th amendment to the constitution.

Bangladesh Ganotantrik Ainjibi Samity will hold the discussion, titled ‘Independent Judiciary, Judge Appointment Process, Judges’ Responsibilities and Impeachment’, at 4pm.

Advocate Subrata Chowdhury will chair the programme, Ganotrantik Ainjibi Samity organising secretary M Helaluddin told UNB.

He said they have taken the initiative to bring all the lawyers, irrespective their party affiliation, under the same umbrella, to
discuss the crucial issue. “We want the lawyers to take a decision on consensus about the government’s move to restore parliament’s power to remove judges.”

Helaluddin said senior legal experts Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister Amirul Islam, Barrister Moinul Hossain, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, ex-justice Syed Amirul Islam, former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru and Dr Shahdeen Malik, among others, will be present at the programme.
