The appointment of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) vice-chancellor Prof Khaleda Ekram was rejected outright by the teachers of BUET on Saturday.

They called upon the President to reconsider Khaleda Ekram's appointment. The teachers made the call at a general meeting of BUET Teachers' Association held on Saturday afternoon.

After the meeting, BUET Teachers' Association president Prof Zainal Abedin told reporters that they were frustrated and shocked at the decision. "We request the president to reconsider the decision," he said.

When asked whether they planned to go for a movement against the decision, Zainal Abedin said, "Admission test is going on now. So, we have refrained from any kind of agitation programme. We hope that our request will be considered by the President." Otherwise, the teachers will sit again and decide about the next course of action.

The BUET teachers said there is a tradition in BUET to appoint teachers on the basis of seniority. But, Prof Khaleda Ekram holds the 26th position in seniority list. So, seniority was violated in appointing her.

Earlier, outgoing BUET vice-chancellor Prof Nazrul Islam handed over the charge to Prof Khaleda Ekram at a simple ceremony at the VC office.

President Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the university, appointed Prof Khaleda Ekram, a teacher of the Architecture Department of BUET, as its first woman vice-chancellor on September 11 for a four-year term.
