CHITTAGONG, Sept 18: The battery driven rickshaws will ply on the streets of the port city Chittagong from today after remaining suspended for 18 days. The Chittagong City Rickshaw Owners Association has declared it in a press conference held at Chittagong Press Club yesterday. Salamat Ali, President of the Chittagong City Rickshaw Owners Association also declared that the Higher Court has directed not to resist the movement of battery driven rickshaws in the city streets. He said that the High Court has ordered to run the battery driven rickshaws for six months in the city roads. He said the High Court issued the order on September 11 last. It may be mentioned that a joint meeting of the Chittagong City Corporation, BRTA, Chittagong District administration and Chittagong Metropolitan Police was held at CMP head quarter on August 25 last took a decision of banning the movement of battery driven rickshaws on the city streets from August 30 as per an Order of the High Court. The meeting had asked the owners of the battery driven rickshaws to remove battery from their vehicle by August 29. Then all the administrations will conduct a joint operation to seize the battery driven rickshaws to be found on the city streets. According to owners, more than 70,000 Battery Driven Rickshaws are moving on the city streets while the traffic department of CMP the numbers would be around 1,50,000. The High Court has issued an order on July 3 last banning the movement of battery driven rickshaws in Dhaka and Chittagong.
