Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has asserted that there is no crisis at the international level over the January 5 parliamentary elections.

"Had there been any crisis, Bangladesh would not have been elected in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) elections," she said.

Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was addressing a press conference at the VIP Lounge of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) International Airport in the capital after returning to Dhaka being elected the CPA chairperson.

It may be mentioned that Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected CPA chairperson and Saber Hossain Chowdhury IPU president within the span of a week.

"This victory is the victory of parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh. We have made significant progress. Bangladesh has become an example to the rest of the world," she said.

The Speaker said she doesn't think that there is any crisis over the January 5 elections.

"It could not be possible to become chairperson and chairman of the CPA and IPU respectively if the western world had no confidence about Bangladesh's democracy and 10th Jatiya Sangsad," she said.

She also said: "It's the victory of Bangladesh's people, culture and democracy."

The Speaker also called for working together for the greater interest of the country and its people.

When asked whether any step would be taken against Latif Siddique for audacious remarks against Prophet Muhammad (SM) and holy Hajj, she said the matter pertains to law. "Steps will be taken against Latif Siddique according to the law of the land," she said.

Newly-elected IPU president Saber Hossain Chowdhury who was also present at the press conference, said a country's image cannot be measured with money. "This victory is recognition that Bangladesh is moving forward. We succeeded to face the challenge since we had self-confidence. This victory is the victory of the image of Bangladesh," he said.

Saber said parliaments now exist in 192 countries of the world. Of them, 185 are the members of IPU and CPU. "Bangladesh is now providing leadership to these countries," he said.

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip ASM Firoze, among others, present at the press conference.
