
Police, however, claimed the two youths were killed during a gunfight at Alekhachar area.
The deceased were identified as Rabbi Islam, 25, and Mohammad Johnny, 22.
Police said the duo were the members of a terrorists group of ‘Jira Sumon’, who attacked Comilla DB Police SI Firoz Hossain and snatched away his pistol on Thursday.
Police also claimed that SI Shahidul Islam and ASI Nazrul Islam also received bullet injuries during the encounter and they were admitted to the hospital.
A man was also arrested in this connection.
DB Police OC Monirul Islam said Jira Sumon and his associates attacked SI Firoz and snatched away his pistol from Jhautala area in the district town on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team chased Sumon’s cohorts in the morning while they with the snatched pistol were going to Comilla Cantonment area by two motorcycles, the OC said.
“The gang members fired gunshots as police put up barricade near Coca Cola factory at about 10am, forcing the law enforcers to fire back that left Rabbi killed on the spot and Johnny critically injured. Johnny died at a hospital in the afternoon,” OC Monirul Islam said.
Police also arrested one Shahadat Hossain from the spot and conducted dives in different places alongwith him.
Meanwhile, police recovered SI Firoz’s pistol, two other foreign made pistols, four bullets and a motorcycle.
