CHITTAGONG, Nov 9: The marine transport workers have called off strike since this evening following a fruitful meeting with the DIG, Chittagong Range police.
Shafiqul Islam, the Deputy Inspector General of Chittagong Range Police, assured the workers of ensuring their security in the waterways countrywide.
During the meeting, marine workers raised their security concern in the 7-point demand.
"We'll look into your demands," the DIG told them.
Then the worker leaders announced withdrawal of their indefinite strike.
The meeting was attended by Haji Shafique Ahmed, President of the Chattagram Bandar Ligherage Contractors Association, leaders of Lighter Vessels Workers Union and Bangladesh River Vessels Workers Federation.
The water transport workers went on an indefinite strike since 11 am of Saturday demanding assurance of security in the river-ways. On enforcement of the strike, operational activities in more than 2000 vessels remained suspended causing a colossal loss to the country's maritime trade.
