Ex-Jamaat MP Sakhawat arrested on war crime charges

Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former Jessore-6 lawmaker Sakhawat Hossain was arrested on Saturday on charges of war crimes committed during 1971 liberation war.

Sakhawat was arrested from his rented house near Masterkhanpara Mosque at Uttarkhan in the capital at 7.15pm on Saturday.

Uttarkhan Police Station officer-in-charge Yunus Ali confirmed it.

The OC said police arrested him after the International Crimes Tribunal issued an arrest warrant.

Sakhawat was elected as Jamaat-e-Islami candidate in 1991 general election from Jessore-6 constituency. He was Jamaat's MP from 1991 to 1996. He used to live at a house at Sector 6 in Uttara. Recently, he got into Uttarkhan residence along with his wife.

Sakhawat Hossain, hails from Keshabpur in Jessore, was a Rajakar commander and assisted Pakistani army during the liberation war in 1971.

In 2009, four major war crime charges were filed against Sakhawat in Jessore.
