The 134th birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani will be observed on Friday with due respect.

Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations have taken up elaborate programmes to commemorate the leader who championed the cause of the peasants and the downtrodden.

On the occasion, recitations from the holy Quran and prayer sessions will be arranged by his followers at his graveside at Shantosh, Tangail.

Besides, Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology (MBUST) and the Bhashani Foundation will hold various programmes at Santosh.

Popularly known as ‘Majlum Jananeta’, the leader of the downtrodden, Bhashani was born on December 12 in 1880 at Dhangara in Sirajganj.

He was a popular leader in his fight against imperialism and oppression of Pakistani rulers. He led the historic Farakka March in 1976 to ensure Bangladesh’s just rights over the share of the Ganges River waters.

His lifelong struggle for a just and exploitation-free society earned him a special place in people’s hearts.

Bhasani joined the Muslim League in 1930 and founded Awami League 1949. He was also elected its first president. Later, in 1957 he founded the National Awami Party.

He was also one of the organisers of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has issued a message paying rich tributes to the great leader.
