RANGPUR, Dec 19: Farmers in Rangpur Division are passing busy time in preparing Boro-seed plantation. Advance seed plantation has already been made in many land plots although the price of seeds is high to some extent this season.
According to sources at Rangpur Regional office of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), in this Boro season, seed plantation target has been fixed at 40, 732 hectares of land. Until now 19,750 hectares of land have been covered.
Agriculture office claims that if this time weather becomes favourable, seed plantation target will exceed. But some farmers claim prices of seeds of BADC (Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation) and other companies have increased by eight to ten taka per kilogram.
While visiting Rangpur Sadar upazila and other upazilas, it was found that farmers were plugging lands somewhere and spreading seeds with water somewhere. And in some places it was seen that seed plantation areas in some places were full of greenery.
Mobarak Ali is a farmer of Chandanpat Union of Rangpur Sadar Upazila. He made Boro seed plantation with various types including BR-28 and hybrid in ten decimal land plot fifteen days ago. Now that has turned into green trees.
Farmer Yakub Ali of Payeraband union of Mithapukur upazila has made all preparations for seed plantation in 30 decimal land plots. He has made preparation for seed plantation with three mounds of paddy seeds from BADC and different private companies and 20 kilograms of his own. He hopes to plant paddy plants in 16 acres of land.
Both the farmers complained of high seed prices.
Rangpur district agriculture office sources said ten kilogram bag of Boro-base seeds is being sold at Tk 415 per pack this season, and as per calculation, the price per kilogram of seeds is Tk 41.50. A ten kilogram bag with certified seeds costs Tk 375 only. Last year the prices of base seeds and certified seeds were Tk 36 and 32 per kilogram respectively.

In Rangpur district, 6,149 hectares have been fixed; out of those, Hybrid is in 1,611 hectares, Ufshi in 4,538 hectares. A total of 5,965 hectares are in Gaibandha district; Hybrid is in 1021 hectares, Ufshi is 4,899 hectares and local variety in 45 hectares. A total of 5,143 hectares are in Kurigram district; Hybrid is in 917 hectares, Ufshi in 4,147 hectares and local variety in 79 hectares. Total 2,373 hectares are in Lalmonirhat district; Hybrid is in 774 hectares, Ufshi in 1,597 hectares and local variety in two hectares. In total 3,659 hectares are in Nilphamari district; Hybrid is in 1,043 hectares and Ufshi in 2,616 hectares. In Dinajpur district, there are 11,310 hectares: Hybrid is in 621 hectares and Ufshi in 10,689 hectares. Total 3,936 hectares are in Thakurgaon district; Hybrid is in 283 hectares and Ufshi in 3,653 hectares. In 2,197 hectares of Panchagarh district, Hybrid is in 221 hectares and Ufshi in 1,976 hectares.
