Road crashes claim 16 lives in 3 dists

At least sixteen people were killed and four others injured in road accidents in Tangail, Naogaon and Manikganj districts on Wednesday.
In Tangail, 10 people, including four members of a family, were killed and three others injured in a fatal road accident on Tangail-Mymensingh road at Ashura in Madhupur upazila.
The deceased were identified as Rahima Khatun, 50, her daughter Salma Begum, 30, two grandsons-Sadequl Islam, 12, and Shafi Islam, 6, of Aralia village, Firoza Begum, 40, Sajid, 3, Abdul Quader, 50 of Gangair village, Habibur Rahman, 55, Hena Akhter, 35, and Esha Akter, 14, of Raktipara village.
Police said the accident took place around 12:30 pm when a Tangail-bound truck from Madhupur hit the tempo coming from the opposite direction, killing the eight people on the spot and five others injured.
The injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where Safi and Esha died after admission. Police seized the truck but its driver fled the scene.
In Naogaon, four people, including a child, were killed and another was injured when a truck hit an auto-rickshaw on Naogaon-Rajshahi highway at Bagachara in Mahadebpur upazila. The deceased were identified as Abdus Sattar, 45, a van-puller, son of of Faraj Ali of Enayetpur village, his daughter Khushi, 8, Ismat Ali, 35, son of Sudha Pramanik of Sharifpur village and Soel Ahmed, 22, son of Abul Kashem of Dogacchi village in sadar upazila.
The accident took place around 12.00 pm when a Rajshahi-bound truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving four people dead on the spot and another injured, said officer-in-charge of Mahadebpur Police Station Saiful Islam.
The injured was taken to sadar hospital.
Meanwhile, police arrested the truck driver from Khoshalbari, 10 kilometers off the spot. Angered by the incident, local people put barricades on Naogaon-Rajshahi highway, disrupting traffic for about two hours.
In Manikganj, a truck driver and his helper were killed when a stone-laden truck plunged into a roadside ditch after breaking a bailey bridge at Kitingchar in Singair upazila early in the morning.
The identities of the deceased could not yet be known.    ?UNB
