The BNP-led 20-party alliance on Saturday welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Commission's statement calling upon all political parties in Bangladesh to exercise restraint and stop the violence immediately.
"We've full support to the UN Human Rights Commission's statement voicing concern over Bangladesh political situation and urging all to stop violence and ensure the rights of people and the opposition," the alliance said in a statement.
The statement, signed by BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman further, said, "We welcome the statement. They (UN) have realised that the problem has arisen from the ruling party's obstacle to observing the opposition's programmes and its oppression."
The alliance, however, voiced doubt whether the current 'unrepresentative government and the partisan state organs, including law enforcement agencies', will be able to carry out a neutral and effective investigation into the ongoing violence as called by the UN HR commission.
The UN HR commission on Friday urged all political parties in Bangladesh to show restraint and bring an immediate end to the violence, and called upon the authorities to ensure prompt, impartial and effective investigation into all killings committed - irrespective of whether they were committed by the State or non-State actors.    ?UNB
