Staff Correspondent The 20-party alliance led Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) of exceeding their limits of jurisdiction by issuing threats to demonstrators. The alliance also asked those officers of the republic who have political ambitions, to join politics only after relinquishing offices. The alliance in a statement said, "The statement of the IGP has created panic and anxiety among the people. The way he made the statement on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia seems that a Chhatra League leader was speaking wearing a police uniform." IGP AKM Shahidul Haque on Friday in a view-exchange meeting at Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur said, "What can people expect from the chief of a political party if she herself gets engaged in illegal activities." With an oblique reference to the BNP, the IGP said, "You had seized schools, colleges and madrasas and burned them. You had killed people, presiding officers and had refrained people from their voting rights. Why? You have made the mistake. Why will people compensate for (your mistake)?" Signed by BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman, the statement also said, "We want to place a question to the armed forces as well as all law enforcement agencies whether they will stay with the 95 percent people or will they carry out orders of the illegal government backed by only 5 percent votes."
