The government blocked popular online voice and message services Viber and Tango on security ground early Sunday.

Internet users can talk and send short messages through Viber and Tango without spending additional money.

Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sent written and verbal order to all telecom operators to block the services from 5am on Sunday, according to BTRC and a number of mobile phone operators.

In the order, BTRC initially decided to shut the services till 6pm, but later extended the time till 11:59pm.

BTRC sources said Viber and Tango was blockade in phases since Saturday night. At first, the mobile phone operators were asked to carry out the order. Later, International Gateway operators were given the instruction.

The sources said BTRC has taken the decision following the order of the home ministry. The decision was taken for security concern.
