Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre organised an evening of tabla recital by Goutam Kumar Sarkar, Iftekhar Alam Prodhan, Swarup Hossain and Zakir Hosen on January 23 at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Gulshan in the city.
Goutam Kumar Sarkar started to learn Tabla at his very early age from his uncle Pandit Moloy Kumar Sarker in Calcutta and also from Pandit Rabin Banerjee. He also took lesson from Pandit, Madan Gopal Das in Chayanaut. He stood first class first in the Inter University competition of Bangladesh in 2003. Presently he is an assistant Tabla teacher in Chayanaut. He is an enlisted regular artist of Radio and TV and also a Computer Engineer and working with a Grameenphone Ltd. of Bangladesh.
Born in Dinajpur, Iftekhar Alam Prodhan started learning Tabla at an early age from his father Mr. A.K. Azad Prodhan, a renowned tabla player and guru in Dinajpur. Later he was trained under Pundit Bijon Kumar and Pundit Sanjay Mukherjee from Kolkata. He is an enlisted artist for Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar. He has won the hearts of many by accompanying famous artists from India and Bangladesh such as Late Syed Zakir Hossain, Priyanka Gope, Bijon Mistri, Shivnath Das, Bijoy Kisloo, Shuvra Guha, Sharathi Chatterjee, Aushim Choudhury and Shuchisree Rai.
Swarup Hossain has come from a family of Rajshahi which carries a great musical heritage. He is the grand-son of the renowned classical vocalist and Musician Late Ustad Mozammel Hossain. His initial musical training started under his father Ustad Rabiul Hossain, a prominent classical vocalist, and later from Shamsul Alam, Jihadul Islam and Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury. He also received training of Tabla from Niti Ranjan Biswas. He is an ICCR Scholar and was awarded the prestigious gold medal for his outstanding performance by the government of India. He has performed in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Ulm and Augsburg. He also performed in Galle Music Festival 2012 in Sri Lanka. Presently he conducts classes at Government College of Music, Dhaka University and Chhayanaut.
Zakir Hosen, disciple of Ustad Akram Khan, Ustad Hasmat Ali Khan and Pandit Virendra Malviya from New Delhi, India, has established himself as one of the brightest stars amongst the tabla players of his generation. He has received higher training from Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, India under ICCR Scholarship for five years. He has accompanied many famous artists at home and abroad. He is now a teacher in the Department of Music, University of Dhaka, Wahid Academy of Music and Chhayanaut.
