Govt to establish varsity at every district, technical school in upazilas

The government has a plan to establish university at every district across the country and technical schools in upazilas aimed at further spreading education up to the doorsteps of all. "Presently, there are in all 117 universities public and private sector in the country," Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said in the National Parliament on Wednesday, while replying to a question from treasury bench member Mrs. Selina Jahan Lita. Of the universities, 37 are public and 80 are private, the minister informed the House. The Education Minister also said the government has already undertaken a project to establish 100 technical schools at 100 upazilas in the first phase and the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project proposal on January 19, 2014 to expand the technical education. He said that the government completed training for 29,166 teachers and employees under the Technical Vocational Education and Training Reform, Skilled and Training Enhancement Project and Skilled Development Project. Besides, the government has a plan to establish female technical school and college in every divisional headquarter under the "Polytechnic Institute Construction" project. He said the government has already provided Taka 127.79 crore to 33 public and private polytechnic institutes as implementation grant to improve quality of the technical education in the country. However, there are two universities in Rangpur and Dinajpur districts for higher education and the government has no plan to establish another university at Thakugaon district, Nahid added. ?BSS
