A new bus service from Dhaka to Gouhati will be launched from May 2.
The proposal that came in December from the Indian government to run the bus service via Sylhet and Shillong has got nod from the Ministry of Road Transports and Bridges.
The approval came at an inter-ministerial meeting at the ministry on Sunday.
"The new bus service will be run on test from May 2," Road Transports and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told reporters after the meeting.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will soon inform the Indian authority of the decision so that it can complete its preparation.
At present, two passenger bus services-Dhaka-Kolkata and Dhaka-Agartala-are in operation.
In December last year, officials from Bangladesh and India conducted a joint survey to assess route conditions and other technical parameters before the launch of Dhaka-Gouhati bus service.
Initially, 26-30-seater minibuses will run on the new route as test operation. Later, changes in the size and quality of buses will be made as per commuters' demand.
All the buses will have WiFi facility and tracking system for the passengers, Obaidul Quader said.
He also said the government has already started improving the immigration and customs services for the route.
