One more innocent victim of burn injury succumbed on Friday at the burn unit in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) bringing the death toll from petrol bomb attacks to 76 since the political violence started on January 6.
Friday marked the 53rd day of the countrywide indefinite transport blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20 party alliance.
In another incident a local leader of Jubo Dal (JCD) was shot to death in a clash between villagers and law enforcers in Tulsipur area under Punoti union in Chirirbandar Upazila of Dinajpur district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, 35, from Bogra, died at around 6:30 am in the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Hailing from Nischintapur village of Kahalu Upazila, trucker Jahangir Alam and helper Masud Rana fell prey to arson attack at Char Matha intersection in Bogra town on February 23 during the agitation of BNP-led 20-party alliance.
They were first admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the capital at DMCH on February 24 as their condition deteriorated.
On January 23, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a truck at Char Matha in Bogra, leaving its driver and helper injured with burns.
Later they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Jahangir, who sustained 64 percent burn injuries in his body, died at the hospital at around 3:30 am.
Meanwhile, a passenger bus was set ablaze by miscreants in city's Johnson Road area on Friday afternoon.
None was reportedly injured in the incident as the passengers managed to get off the bus immediately after the arson attack.
Locals said that a gang of miscreants set fire to the passenger bus in front of Judge Court in old part of Dhaka around 6:30pm and fled the scene.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), meanwhile, detained 13 activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami from different places of the city on Friday. Of the detainees, ten are BNP activists and three are Jamaat men.
Besides, six workers of a spinning mill suffered injuries, including five with burns, in a petrol bomb attack on a pickup in Rupganj of Narayanganj around 10:00pm last night.
The burn victims were identified as Abdus Salam, 25, Sohel, 22, Helal, 35, Belal, 25, Rashed, 27, while the sixth victim is Kabir, 30. All of them are workers of Mahbub Spinning Mill in Bhulta of the district.
Our Dinajpur Correspondent added that a local leader JCD was shot to death in a clash between villagers and law enforcers in Tulsipur area under Punoti union in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Rezwan, 25, a local Jubo Dal leader and son of local BNP leader Habibur Rahman.
Six others, including four police men, were injured as well in the clash, said Anisur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chirirbandar Thana.
