W ith the tagline of ?Mathematics for a better world?, the World Math Week was celebrated across the world at the mid-march this year. The WMW is an international event for the mathematics lovers, structured to celebrate all over the globe. The week-long event began with the Pi day celebration on 14 March and continued to March 20.
It is being organized to popularize and to spread the inner beauty and importance of mathematics among the students and to inspire them to build up an intuitive interest towards mathematics.
One of the major vision of WMW is recover the students' fear over mathematics and encourage them to dissect the reality, analyse the facts and reason logically about their surroundings. The whole week is all about sharing knowledge; to teach and to learn from others.
Schools, colleges, universities, math clubs, science communities of all over the world celebratedthe week as a festival from March 14 to March 20 this year. Many organizations from Bangladesh had organized various types of events to celebrate this week. Neutrino ACC Science Club of Adamjee Cantonment College arranged a programme 'All Time NASC Math week' on March 14.
There were held Olympiads on Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry including Math quiz, Math using no calculator, Rubik's Cube, Math fiction writing etc. The winners of these events were given prizes on 21 March 2015. About 3000 students from almost 30 institutions participated in the event. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Professor Mohammad Kaykobad attended the prize giving ceremony as chief guest.
ACC Principal Brigadier General Tameem Ahmed Chowdhury and Club Moderator Mohammad Mizanur Rahman spoke at the event among others.
In 17 March, the students of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), arranged a Math Fest to celebrate the World Math Week 2015. They celebrated the event with Math Olympiad, Sudoku Olympiad, Pi Olympiad and many other programs related to Mathematics. Among others Capt. Muhammad Nayeem, Capt. Mohammad Abdul Wahed and Ahosan Habib Shrabon attended there in math carnival.
'Boson Science Club', an active science club from Mymensingh, celebrated the day by cutting cake, math talks and other math activities like Tell the Value of Pi, Brain Teaser Olympiad etc.
Students of Comilla University also celebrated the week by arranging math Olympiad, math talks, math rally and by cutting cake. About 500 students of the university join the rally. 'Comilla University Science Club' arranged that programme on behalf of their university.
'Dinajpur Math Club' was tremendously active in this whole week. They arranged a whole lot of events for their young club members. Math talks, documentary show, math rally, math Olympiad, cake and so on.
Ashek Mahmud College of Jamalpur arranged a math rally to raise consciousness about mathematics practice. JamalpurZilla School celebrated the week by cutting cake and arranging day long workshop on mathematics.Khulna University students arranged a couple of events like Math Olympiad, Math Talks, Sudoku Olympiad, Math Walk, Code Breaking, Puzzle Day etc.
Bangladesh Science Society, along with the help of monthly science magazine, the Zero to Infinity, arranged a Math Olympiad for the students of New Model School and College, to celebrate World Math Week.
A renowned math club from Chittagong, 'Chittagong Math Circle' celebrated the week by watching movies, math related documentaries, math lectures and by cutting cake.
Beside those events members of many math clubs, Facebook groups, celebrated the week by giving status at Facebook and twitter using #WMW2015 hashtag. Some arranged online math quizzes, some imposed restriction on using calculator in this week as a part of no calculator week.
Actually anyone can determine what to do. Any activity related to mathematics will do, from a short classroom Olympiad activity for a handful of toddlers to a stadium-size all-week lecture program. Programs can be for any audience, such as the public, employees, government leaders, the media, teachers, or students, say's the official website of World Math Week (worldmathweek.org).
If anyone want to organize an event in his/her area, he/she has to register in world math week official website. They must use WMW logo at their banner, poster and other materials. After the event photos with details has to be submitted. The best institutions or individuals from all WMW recognized countries will be awarded at the WMW Math Congress 2015, which will be held at mid-2015.
