City polls: Nomination submission deadline expires Sunday

The deadline for submitting nomination papers in the three city corporation elections, slated for April 28, is going to expire at 5pm on Sunday.

As of Saturday, a total of 58 mayoral aspirants collected nomination papers to contest the polls in capital’s two city corporations -- Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) -- while 18 in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election.

Of them, 30 mayoral aspirants collected nomination papers for the DSCC polls while 28 for the DNCC polls.

Besides, 369 aspirants bought nomination papers to vie for reserved councillor posts and 1951 for general councillor posts in the two city corporation elections till Saturday.

Meanwhile, seven mayoral candidates, 20 female aspirants and 151 councillor aspirants have so far submitted their nomination papers for the polls race.

Of them, four mayoral aspirants submitted nomination papers in the DSCC while the rest three in DNCC.

Meanwhile, no mayoral aspirant blessed by two major political parties-- Awami League and BNP -- has submitted their nomination yet.

In DSCC polls, 30 aspirants purchased nomination papers to contest the mayoral post, while 208 for reserved councillor posts and 1128 for general councillor posts, said Nawabul Alam, staff officer of DSCC returning officer.

In DNCC polls, 28 aspirants bought nomination papers to contest the mayoral post, while 161 for reserved councillor posts and 823 for general councillor posts, Nazrul Islam, staff officer of DNCC returning officer.

Meanwhile, 18 mayoral aspirants purchased nomination papers in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election with three of them submitting their nomination papers till Saturday, CCC polls returning officer Abdul Baten told UNB.

Besides, 94 female aspirants bought nomination papers to fight for the reserved councillor posts, while 559 aspirants to vie for the general councillor posts.

The Election Commission on Saturday issued show-cause notices to 11 prospective candidates -- 10 in DSCC and one in DNCC-- on various charges of violation of electoral code of conduct.

With the 11 aspirants, the commission has so far issued show-cause notices to 101 probable candidates --78 in DSCC and 23 in DNCC- for breaching the code of conduct.

On March 18, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the election schedules for DSCC, DNCC and CCC fixing voting on April 28.

According to the schedules, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is March 29 while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 1 and 2 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 9.
