The Supreme Court has stayed a notice cancelling a deal between the government and Jamuna Resorts Ltd (JRL) on lease of a land near the Bangabandhu Bridge.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has issued a stay order on the notice issued by Bangladesh Bridges Authority (BBA) to JRL until May 17.
On Apr 23, a High Court bench had blocked the same notice for three months.
The government appealed against the decision, which was heard by the top court on Thursday. It instructed the state to file a plea with the Appellate Division.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state, while the BBA was represented by Abdun Nur Dulal.
Barrister Rafique Ul Huq argued for JRL.
"The stay will remain in effect until May 17 and the state has been instructed to file a 'leave to appeal' petition within that time. The matter will be heard on that day," Huq told after Thursday's hearing.
JRL had sought lease 1,200 acres of land for 30 years in Tangail district east of Bangabandhu Bridge on the river Jamuna from the Bridges Authority on November 21 in 1999 to develop the resort.
The Bridges Authority on April 1, this year served a notice cancelling the agreement 'for not clearing dues and not signing the certificate of satisfaction'.
JRL moved Dhaka Judge's Court against the decision. The court on Apr 2 stayed the notice after a primary hearing of the petition but turned it down on Apr 22 following full hearing.    ?
