Jahangirnagar University : Twenty-five teachers of the departments of Computer Sciences and Engineering (CSE) and Geological Sciences have resigned protesting the JU authority’s decision to allocate the 3rd floor to the Department of Environmental Science.
Among the teachers , 15 are from the CSE Dept while 10 from Geological Sciences Dept.
CSE Chairman, Prof Sharif Uddin confirmed the matter to the Daily Observer saying they have submitted their resignation papers to the Vice-Chancellor on Saturday while resignation paper of the teachers of Geological Sciences would do the same on Sunday.
The CSE teachers are : Syndicate member Prof Hanif Ali, dept chairman Prof Md Sharif Uddin, Prof Imdadul Islam, Prof Md Golam Moazzem, Prof Jugal Krishna, Prof Akram Hosssain, Prof Zahidur Rahman, Associate Professors Md Humayun Kabir, Israt Zahan, Abu Sayeed Md Mustafizur Rahman,Golam Mozzaum and lecturers Swarnali Bosak, Tanjila Rahman and Tahsina Hassan.
The Geological Sciences teachers are :Prof Delwar Hossain, Prof ATM Shawkat Hossain, Prof Zulla Zalalur Rahman, Prof Sharif Hossain Khan, Associate Professors Mahafuzul Haque, Emdadul Haque , Assistant Professors Mazada Islam and Hasan Imam, and lecturers Mahamuda Khutun and Shawkhat Hossain.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of CSE and Geological sciences departments went on a fast-unto-death strike boycotting all classes and examinations in front of their respective departments demanding the allotment of third floor for each department and withdrawal the Thursday’s syndicate decision.
On Thursday night, an emergency syndicate meeting decided to handover of 28,000 square ft. area of newly built 3rd floor of Computers Science and Geological Sciences building to the department of Environmental Sciences.
Contacedt, JU Registrar Abu Bakar Siddique said, “We got the resignation letters of the 15 CSE dept teachers, necessary steps would be taken according to the university rules and regulations”.
Teachers-students of the department of Environmental Science was staging demonstration boycotting class and exam since February demanding space of 28,000 sft of newly built 3rd floor of Computer Science and Geological Sciences building while Teachers and students of CSE and Geological Sciences dept. also demand the new space.
CSE and Geological Sciences department claimed that those spaces of newly built 3rd floor were built as part of their plan to eradicate problems with computer labs and others for their departments.
Earlier, JU syndicate formed a five-member committee, led by Professor Alauddin, VC of Moulana Bhasani Science and Engineering University, to solve the problem.
Syndicate on Thursday has come to the decision as per the recommendation made by the committee.
