CHITTAGONG, July 12: The Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested another person in connection with the smuggling of cocaine through Chittagong Port today.
The arrested person is identified as Mehedi, 30, brother-in-law of Fazlu Mia living in London.
According to DB police, acting on a tip-off, the police raided a Security Office in Agrabad at about 4:30pm and arrested Mehedi.
However, the total number of arrested people has increased to 5 with Mehedi being the latest to be held.
Mehedi is also the cousin of Gulam Mustafa Sohel who was arrested earlier in connection with the haul.
Mehedi will be placed before the Court on Monday with a remand prayer for questioning.
While the DB police officials were interrogating the four previously arrested suspects, they found the involvement of Mehedi with cocaine smuggling.
Four other arrested earlier are Mustafa Kamal, AK Azad, Gulam Mustafa Sohel and Md Atiqur Rahman.
A three-day remand each had been granted to Atikur Rahman Khan and Mustafa Kamal.  Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate gave the order on Saturday shortly after the investigation officer in charge of the case filed a petition following the expiry of the 10 days remand of the two.
Detectives suspected that one of Kamal's relatives Bakul Mia was the mastermind behind this smuggling of cocaine.
Bangladeshi citizen Mia lives in the United Kingdom.
According to the investigators, Kamal's relative Bakul Mia masterminded the smuggling while an Indian citizen named Raju was also involved.  Meanwhile, a total of 321 samples collected from 107 drums of suspected cocaine have been sent to three testing laboratories in Dhaka for retesting those samples on July 9.
The Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate ordered to send those samples to Armed Forces Food and Drugs Laboratory, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Laboratory and Narcotics Control Department laboratory, all located in the capital.
