Shamsul Islam Monir, 29, was brutally killed by some local musclemen alleging him to be a robber at Kaziatol village in Darora Union under Muradnagar Upazila in Comilla on Tuesday.
They killed him by cutting the veins of his legs after beating him up.
Immediately after the sensational murder of the 13-year-old child, Shamiul Alam Rajon, in Sylhet, the killing of Monir has raised a storm on the social media site Facebook.
Moslem Uddin Sarkar, victim's father, filed a murder case against 18 people with Muradnagar Police Station.
Family members said that Mohammad Ali, an alleged human trafficker, called Monir to his house early in the morning of Tuesday to repay the money Ali took from Monir.
When he went to Ali's house to take the money, Ali along with his cohorts beat him up and cut the veins of his legs, they said.
The killers spread a rumour that Monir was lynched during robbery attempt in Ali's house.
On information, a team of police of the Muradnagar Thana led by its Sub-Inspector Shamsul Alam sent Monir to the Upazila Health Complex where the doctors on duty declared him dead.
Moslem Uddin alleged that Mohammad Ali took some money from his son promising to send him abroad.
"But he did not send my son," he said and added that Ali called his son on phone to return the money he owed to Monir and killed him."
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muradnagar Thana Mizanur Rahman told the Daily Observer on Thursday afternoon that the Detective Branch (DB) of police was looking into the case.
Police arrested one Abul Hasan in this connection on Wednesday night.
