The High Court has set Monday (today) to begin the hearing afresh on the appeal of disaster Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya against the sentence imposed by the lower court.
Following a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the High Court bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice SM Mozibor Rahman fixed the date for hearing the appeal.
On June 14, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court annulled a High Court verdict that had acquitted Maya from the corruption case lodged in 2007 during the caretaker regime. On the same day, the apex court sent back the appeal of Maya to the High Court for its further hearing and disposal.
The anti- graft body registered the case against Maya, also ruling AL leader, with Sutrapur Police Station on June 13, 2007 on the allegation of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 29 lakh and concealing information about it.
A Dhaka court on February 14, 2008 handed down 13 years' imprisonment to Maya and fined him Tk 5 crore and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his ill-gotten wealth.
