The arrested was identified as Jewel Biswas, 30.
Earlier, his ill-fated first wife Nasima Akhtar was found dead in a Kamrangirchar residence on June 30.
Senior Assistant Commissioner (Lalbag Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police RM Faizur Rahman said, "We arrested Jewel from Dhanmondi after a month of search. During primary interrogation, he confessed to have killed Nasima."
Jewel developed an affair with Nasima, a maid servant of a residence, after getting acquainted with her while working there as a paint-worker, he said.
The police official, however, disclosed, "He introduced himself as Emon to marry her faking his original identity and said that he was a resident of Barisal although he actually hailed from Gopalganj."
After their marriage, Jewel took Nasima to her village home at Palbarhi in Jessore's Kotwali. He used to go to his in-law's residence twice or thrice a month, but avoided taking Nasima to his own village home. The couple had a four-and-half-year-old son Dipu.
Three years after his first marriage, Jewel married another woman Sumi and fathered a son with Sumi as well. Jewel told police that his second wife sensed about his first marriage nearly two years ago.
"He told Sumi that his first wife died after giving birth to a son and that the child was being looked after by a relative," Faizur said.
Jewel murdered Nasima on June 30 in his bid to prove his claim absolute and undoubted, he added.
A hunt for Emon began soon after the killing. Police found one of Emon's photographs in Kamrangirchar house and collected his phone number from Nasima's in-laws.
Police tracked the phone for a month and got convinced that Jewel and Emon were in fact the same person. He was finally arrested Thursday from his brother's Dhanmondi residence.
Police filed a case with Kamrangirchar station in connection with Suchona murder.
