An Italian national was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the capital's diplomatic enclave in Gulshan Monday evening.
Police said the 50-year-old deceased identified as Travella Cesare was the project manager of an international organisation in the capital's Baridhara in Gulshan.
Confirming the death of the Italian, Abdul Ahad, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Division, said the victim sustained at least three bullet wounds in different parts of his body.
The ADC, however, could not say anything about the motive behind the murder, but said they were trying to unearth the mystery behind the killing and to find out the murderers. When asked, he said no one has been arrested in this connection as yet.
Quoting local people and witnesses, Inspector Sirajul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station, said a gang of three unidentified armed criminals riding on a motorcycle sprayed several bullets indiscriminately at the foreigner. When the victim fell down on the ground, the criminal also snatched a bag from the victim before speeding away.
Asked, the OC said the Italian was shot by the criminals on Road-90 in Gulshan-2 area, near the Egyptian High Commission, at around 7:00pm. He said an identity card of the organisation he works for was found in the victim's pocket.
The locals, pedestrians and witnesses said they found the victim in a critical state and rushed him to the nearby United Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Later, on information, police rushed to the spot. They said the Italian national fell victim to the killers while he was jogging in the area.
Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director of the Legal and Media Wing of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), told this correspondent they were also trying to unfold the motive behind the killers of the Italian and also trying to find out the killers.
