CHITTAGONG, Oct 4:  US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat on Sunday said that the maritime security issue was a cornerstone of the two countries' security relationship.
She was addressing the closing ceremony of the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) at the Bangladesh Naval Base Isha Khan here.
She said, "?for nearly 70 years, the US along with their allies and partners have maintained freedom of navigation and security in Asia based on the international law that underpins the region's remarkable economic growth and stability." "To do this, the US implements a 'whole of government strategy.' We employ diplomacy, multilateral institutions, support international laws and standards, and build maritime capacity. Maritime Domain Awareness and Maritime Security are important components of our broader commitment towards maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region," Bernicat added.
She also lauded the effective measures taken by Bangladesh government on human trafficking and drugs smuggling, as well as anti-piracy measures taken on the high seas. Bernicat further applauded the role of Bangladesh in fighting other forms of transnational crimes including terrorism.
