Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College (SSMC) was declared closed for an indefinite period following a string of clashes between two factions of ruling Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on Sunday afternoon.
The college authorities also asked the students to vacate its two dormitories by the afternoon and confirmed that the medical activities at the hospital would continue.
Witnesses and police sources said the clashes between two groups of BCL erupted following feuds among them over several issues, including a faction's solidarity with the protesting medical college admission aspirants.
As part of the feuds, equipped with sticks and various other weapons, around a hundred of activists from both the groups-one group is led by SSMC unit of BCL President Anisur Rahman and another by General Secretary Shahriar Hossain Shanto-locked into the clash in the afternoon, added the witnesses and police.
They said several activists from both the groups also sustained injuries during the string of clashes from Sunday morning till the afternoon.
Talking to The Daily Observer, Biplab Sarker, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division, confirmed the matter adding that none was held in this regard while additional forces had been deployed in and around the college campus to avoid untoward situation.
