SHERPUR, Nov 3: A court in Sherpur on Tuesday awarded seven years' rigorous imprisonment to five persons including the husband of the victim in a sensational rape case.
The convicts are: Shafiqul Islam (27), Abdus Salam (25), Monu Mia (26), Golam Mostafa (30) and husband of the rape victim Nazrul Islam Bulbul (27).
The court also fined each convict Tk 30 thousand. They will have to serve another year jail term if they fail to pay the penalty. They were found guilty of raping a newly married girl and video recording the scene in the Modhutila Echo Park in Sherpur on July 17 last year.
Judge Md Sayedur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Sherpur pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom at about 11 am.
According to the case documents, the convicts raped the girl on gun point and recorded its video. They demanded Tk 50 thousand from the family of the girl in a deceptive manner, threatening to release the video through Bluetooth and internet. As the family refused to pay the money, they circulated the video.
The victim filed two cases under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Act.
On December 24, police filed charge sheets in the case accusing five including husband of the victim and the leaser of the Echo Park. The judge recorded testimony of 17 witnesses in the case and pronounced verdict on Tuesday.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Kibria Bulu expressed satisfaction with the judgment. Defence lawyer Advocate Horidus Kormokar Swapon, however, said that the charges against Golam Mostafa, the leaser of the park, were not proved.
