Law Minister Anisul Haque has alleged that family members of executed war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid are spreading falsehood over mercy petition to create confusion at home and abroad.

“They (Salauddin, Mujahid) sought mercy as per law, but the President did not pardon them. The verdicts have been executed as per law and constitution,” the minister told journalist at his Secretariat office on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, the families of  Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mujahid have raised doubts over their move to seek presidential clemency.

The Law Minister had told media about filing of mercy petitions by the convicts while the families said they would only believe it if they hear it from the convicts or their lawyers.

Replying to a question, he said that the mercy petition would have to be published if the President gives permission.

“We can execute the verdict despite non-submission of mercy petitions. They got capital punishment by the Apex Court, so there is nothing to be gained by making it an issue,” the minister added.
