Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) election to the council-2015 for the period 2016-18 was held on Saturday at ICAB office in the capital's Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue.
Total of 39 individual candidates are contesting for 18 posts of ICAB Council of Dhaka Regional Constituency and 14 candidates are in the race for 9 posts of Dhaka Regional Committee.
In Chittagong, 3 candidates are contesting for 2 posts of ICAB Council of Chittagong Regional Constituency while 5 members of Chittagong Regional Committee became elected without any contest.
1444 ICAB members got their voting rights to elect different committees for 2016-18 sessions. Many of the voters living abroad and out of Dhaka and Chittagong Metropolitan area enjoyed voting through online voting module.
A five-member election commission headed by ICAB chief election commissioner Anil Chandra Nath FCA conducted the election peacefully.
The other members of ICAB EC were MD Abul Kashem FCA, M Idris Ali, Mohammad Solaiman and MD Kudrat-e-Khuda.
Talking about the election procedure, chief election commissioner told UNB that ICAB members can contest individually in the elections as it is a unique distinction of the organisation that there are no divided panels in the election.
"Most of the elections of professional organisations in Bangladesh are held between two or more panels which are formed out of bifurcation of the members of the respective organisations but here in ICAB, we have no panel," he said.
AC Nath, also the former president of ICAB said the election procedure is very transparent and rules-abiding so that there are no campaigns, posters or influence exercised by the candidates in the election area.
ICAB always arranges its council and regional election at least a month before expiration of the current committee. All the running committees of the organisation will expire on January 1, 2016.
The election result will be notified later by the ICAB Election Commission and ICAB website.     ?UNB
