Jhenaidah, Dec 2 : A Bangladesh Chhatra League leader has allegedly been shot at by the Kaliganj Municipality mayor during a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League in Jhenaidah. Mayor Mostafizur Rahman Biju admitted firing from his guns when his house was attacked allegedly by local Awami League MP Anwarul Azim Anar's supporters on Wednesday. Kaliganj Upazila BCL Joint Secretary 'Sumon' was admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries, Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Azbahar Ali said. Biju, said no-one was hit by bullets fired from his licensed pistol and shotgun. Locals said Mayor Biju and former MP Abdul Mannan had disputes with current MP Anar over who would control the tender business in the area. Anar's men prevented the work to develop a road at Bakulia Khayertola after losing the Tk 2.7 million tender two months ago. They stopped the work again when it resumed on Wednesday. ASP Ali said Mayor Biju had an altercation with Anar's men when he went to visit the project on Wednesday. One person was injured during the 'fracas'. At around 12:30pm, nearly 150 people, who came riding motorcycles, attacked the mayor's house, Ali said. "The mayor's men chased away the attackers and the mayor himself fired four rounds from his licensed pistol and two rounds from his shotgun," he said. Sumon was shot at the time, he added. Biju said he had only fired blank shots and no one was injured in that incident. MP Anar could not be reached for comments. ?bdnews24.com
